The winners of the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2021 Sustainable Communities – Tidy Towns Awards were announced on Saturday 5 March 2022 at an event hosted by last year’s winner, Albury.

The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2021 Sustainable Communities – Tidy Towns Overall Award was presented to Singleton, qualifying the town to represent NSW in the National Awards to be held in Hastings, Victoria in 2022.

Running nationally since 1990, these awards have evolved to encompass projects and initiatives with a focus on environmental sustainability and resource management to reflect a growing awareness of the importance of community-led environmental action. The awards recognise the hard work undertaken by regional towns, councils, individuals and groups, encouraging the sharing of best practices and ideas to improve our vibrant rural towns.

Overall winner Singleton also won the Recycled Organics category and the Heritage and Culture category, was a joint winner in the Communication and Engagement category, and was Highly Commended in the Circular Economy, Litter Prevention, School’s Achievement and Young Legends categories.

The judges remarked that Singleton, a long-time competitor in the Sustainable Communities – Tidy Towns Awards program, has continued its high-level of commitment and enthusiasm, delivering a range of well planned and executed projects demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and the community across all awards categories, making the town highly deserving of the win.

Val Southam, Chief Executive of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW acknowledged that the last year was a time of great stress for many regional communities who battled natural disasters and the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The hardships faced by many regional communities were at times devasting. Yet, time and time again, these communities showed a great depth and breadth of community spirit, cooperation, fortitude and collaboration, which are reflected in the projects entered in this year’s awards,” commented Ms Southam.

“Keep Australia Beautiful would like to congratulate all entrants and winners on the great work being done in the regions.”
