Clean Beaches

The Clean Beach Challenge is a fun competition, which aims to enhance beachside communities by promoting personal initiative, civic pride and environmental awareness. Through competition and awards, the program provides recognition to people who care for their community and coastal environment.

The Clean Beach Challenge assessors visited the nominated beaches along the NSW coastline between the 15-19 September and are now compiling their reports. Click below for a list of local media stories from assessing week:

2009 Clean Beach Challenge Regional Winners will be announced at the beginning of November and the State Winners will be announced in December 2008.

Awards Criteria


 

 

 

 

 

 

Overall Clean Beach Award Assessors take into account beach’s geographic, environmental and economic circumstances. They assess how efficiently and effectively the community uses the resources available to them against a range of criteria.

These include:

-Tidiness and litter abatement

- Visitor friendliness and hospitality

- Fauna and flora

- Management of activities

- Community interaction including youth activities

- Resource conservation and waste management

- Local government leadership within a community.

The Overall entry is related to a demonstrated holistic approach to your beach based on the above criteria and not specifically related to the category (categories) you enter.

 


Resource Recovery Award

- Outstanding accomplishment in resource recovery and management

- Evidence of community, business and/or local government initiatives in promoting resource recovery, managing waste materials and reducing packaging to protect our coastal environments

 



 

Friendly beach Award

- Visitor hospitality and safety

- Instructive and easily understood local information facilities

- Clean, well maintained and signposted public/ commercial facilities

- Evidence of a commitment to and active promotion of visitor friendliness

 

 

  

Litter Prevention Award

- Accomplishment in litter prevention, management and education

- Evidence of sound and proactive litter management and abatement activities

- Public place recycling facilities

  

 

 

Water Conservation Award

- Outstanding accomplishment in water conservation

- Evidence of community, business and/or local government initiatives in promoting water reuse, filtration and conservation to protect our coastal environments

 

 

Young Legends Award

- Outstanding accomplishment by youth or by a beach/community which encourages and promotes youth activity

- Examples of Young Legends include volunteers, scout/girl guide groups, primary schools students, high school students, youth groups, university students, etc under the age of 25 years

 

 

Community Partnerships and Action Award

- Outstanding community organisation and pride, expressed through civic, cultural and environmental activities

- Evidence of strong partnerships between the local beach community (including clubs and organised groups), local business and local councils

 

 

Environmental Protection Award

- Outstanding accomplishment in the protection and commitment to the preservation of local fauna and flora. Examples include weed eradication policies and programs, partnerships between council and the community which are designed to identify, rehabilitate and/or protect local fauna and flora

- Commitment to the maintenance and protection of the coastal/dune biodiversity
