City of Kogarah wins
Sustainable Cities Awards for 2011

After landing the NSW State Overall Sustainable Cities Award in July, Kogarah has gone on to win the National Keep Australia Beautiful, Sustainable Cities Award for 2011.

The Award was announced on Monday November 21 at the national awards ceremony hosted by 2010 national winner, the City of Stirling in Western Australia.

The Sustainable Cities program is a Keep Australia Beautiful initiative that recognises outstanding environmental initiatives implemented by local government authorities, schools and community groups and businesses. It encourages public awareness of a range of environmental issues affecting metropolitan NSW.

Peter McLean, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW warmly congratulated Kogarah City Council on its outstanding win.

“The hard work of Kogarah City Council, local community groups, schools, businesses and passionate individuals all helped Kogarah to win this highly respected and coveted national award. And it is well deserved; the Kogarah of today is an excellent example of communication and consultation in action. A sensible, sensitive approach is evident in the ‘Bright Future Better Lifestyle: Kogarah 2020” plan which defines the sustainable direction of the city.  The plan deals not only with issues of sustainability, infrastructure, litter and waste management but recognises the cities Aboriginal heritage, encouraging reconciliation and preservation. As a City, Kogarah has set an impressive benchmark for other Cities around the county” Peter said.

Kogarah also picked up the Dame Phyllis Frost Litter Prevention Award and the Heritage & Culture Award.
