The Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2011 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards moves into an important stage next week, as 17 assessors set off to cover over 20,000 kilometres across New South Wales in search of this State’s top Tidy Town.
Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities is the flagship program of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW and 2011 marks its 31st Anniversary. The program fosters and recognises group and individual endeavours that protect, preserve and enhance our local environments and communities across regional NSW.
Eighty towns throughout rural NSW will be visited during
Assessing Week (August 15-19) by one of the 17 volunteers that have been trained as official award assessors. The communities are competing in six population categories, with most in the running for best overall town for 2011. The results will be announced from November 4 to 6 at the much anticipated Tidy Towns Awards Weekend in Lithgow, current Overall winner.
Peter McLean, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, said Assessing Week was the beginning of a lengthy judging process that culminated in the Awards Weekend, which is always hosted by the current overall Tidy Towns title-holder.
“The Awards Weekend presents a great opportunity to learn from other Tidy Towns participants, attend workshops and build important networks around rural NSW. You don’t have to be a participant I encourage all community-minded people to contact us for an invitation to this exciting weekend focused on building sustainable communities,” Peter McLean said.
“The written submissions indicate that many towns throughout the State are developing innovative and resourceful ways of being sustainable in the face of a host of financial, environmental and social issues. These communities embody the Tidy Towns Awards ethos and with great enthusiasm.”
All Tidy Towns assessors have undergone a comprehensive two day training course in preparation for their role of assessing a range of town projects that have been nominated for an award category. All assessors are experienced environmental professionals from a variety of backgrounds including, local and state government, community groups, education institutions and the private sector.
As well as the Overall State Tidy Towns Award, awards will be given in the following categories:
- Essential Energy Bush Spirit Award
- Office of Environment and Heritage NSW Cultural Heritage Award
- “Do the Right Thing” Waste Minimisation Award, sponsored by Packaging Stewardship Forum
- Office of Environment and Heritage NSW Wildlife Corridors and Habitats Conservation Award
- Water Conservation Award
- Schools Environment Award
