You may know the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, part of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, manages national parks and reserves in NSW on behalf of the public, about 8% of the land area of the state. What this means is that whilst these core conservation areas can represent examples of our unique natural heritage values and outstanding scenery, in more than 92% of the landscape there is an opportunity to create wildlife habitats and corridors to help provide the necessary links for nature. With climate change, this is even more important.
For communities with important wildlife habitats and corridors it is important to ensure that they continue to be cared for and maintained into the future. There are also opportunities to consider more formal protection of these places through application for a Wildlife Refuge or Conservation Agreement. These conservation partnerships recognise the significant contribution that all landholders can make to the conservation effort across the state, and provide an avenue for ongoing monitoring and support through the Department’s Conservation Partners Program. More than 1,000 landholders are currently involved, with over 1.94m hectares protected.
The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water Conservation Partners Program is proud to sponsor the Wildlife Habitats and Corridors Category in the Tidy Towns program, in recognition of the efforts by communities to make conservation of local natural heritage an important part of living in a quality environment.
Why not consider taking up a voluntary conservation option such as a Conservation Agreement, Wildlife Refuge or Property Registration and join the network of landholders managing land for conservation of wildlife habitats and corridors into the future?
DECCW offers ongoing support to landholders in their endeavors. For more information please:
