Graffiti Action Day - Sunday 2nd May 2010
Welcome to the Graffiti Action Day website!
This is an Australian first initiative supported by the NSW Government and we greatly appreciate your involvement.
Removal of graffiti by volunteers requires the approval of the site owner. Utilities such as power poles, transmission boxes, RTA signs, etc. can only be cleaned by the owner of these assets. Utility owners around NSW will be informed about Graffiti Action Day, and will be involved in removing graffiti from their own sites.
The first ever Graffiti Action Day, Sunday 2nd May 2010 was a huge success, thanks to the involvement and support of over 1000 volunteers throughout NSW.
NSW Attorney General John Hatzistergos thanked the volunteers who have already registered for helping to make the inaugural Graffiti Action Day 2010 a success and encouraged others to join a clean up event in their local community this Sunday.
“Everybody who rolls up their sleeves and lends a hand on Sunday for Graffiti Action Day is showing real pride in their local community,” Mr Hatzistergos said.
“They’re pitching in to make their neighbourhoods cleaner and safer places to live and sending a clear message to graffiti vandals that they’ve had enough.”
Following the success of Graffiti Action Day 2010 in NSW, Mr Hatzistergos said he supports calls to expand it to other states and territories and make it a national day of action from next year.
Graffiti Action Day 2010 involves:
• More than 1000 volunteers
• 142 graffiti cleanup sites
• 1000 buckets and safety goggles
• 26 community organisations
• 28 councils
Peter McLean, Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, said more than 1000 volunteers took part in community clean up events at more than 142 graffiti sites.
“We have seen a real grassroots effort from communities and councils around the state to take a stand against graffiti vandalism this weekend,” Mr McLean said.
“Graffiti Action Day has shown us just how easy it is to remove graffiti quickly and effectively. All you need is a bit of know-how and the right product.”
Mr McLean said graffiti costs the NSW economy and tax payers over $100 million each year.
“For example, Campbelltown Council alone spent $280,000 on cleaning up graffiti last year while the City of Sydney spends more than a million,” he said.
“We know that removing graffiti quickly boosts civic pride, minimises crime and the perception of crime.”
All volunteers were briefed in techniques for safe and effective graffiti removal and provided with personal protection equipment.
Graffiti was removed using a number of methods including scrubbing with environmentally friendly SoSafe cleaning products and water and a number of high pressure water blasters provided by council mobile graffiti removal vehicles.
